Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends current science with traditional and natural forms of medicine — including nutrition, botanical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and homeopathy — to treat and prevent a wide range of acute and chronic health concerns.
NDs spend significant time with patients to design carefully individualized treatments that take into account physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of wellbeing. These strategies emphasize nutrition, lifestyle changes and the body’s natural ability to heal itself in order to target the root causes of disease, rather than just the symptoms.
Medical coverage
Although not covered by MSI, most extended medical plans cover part of or all naturopathic medical services. It is best to contact your health insurance provider if you are unsure about the scope of your coverage. Dr. Karen can direct bill for most insurance plans.
Licensing
Naturopathic medicine is a licensed profession that abides by natural standards of practice. To become a ND you must attend one of the four-year accredited institutions (two in Canada; five in the United States), and pass licensing board exams.
Nova Scotia has now become one of several provinces to protect the title of “Naturopathic Doctor.” An ND in Nova Scotia has to be a member of the provincial and national Naturopathic Associations (NSAND & CAND), and meet their rigorous requirements.
